How to choose a robot vacuum: the specifications that really matter

Comparing robot vacuum cleaners based solely on suction power leads to wrong decisions. The best model is the one that works well in a specific apartment, requires little intervention and has a reasonable maintenance cost. Marketing parameters do not show how many times the user will free the robot from cables, clean the station and correct unwashed edges.

1. Navigation and Mapping

LiDAR maps quickly and works well in the dark. Camera systems can better recognize specific obstacles, but they require good software and raise additional privacy questions. Increasingly, manufacturers combine several types of sensors.

Check if the robot saves multiple floors, allows you to edit rooms, create no-go zones, and arrange cleaning sequences. The behavior after moving the furniture and partially changing the map is also important.

2. Obstacles of everyday life

Cables, socks, toys and animal bowls are a bigger test than an open living room. Some models recognize objects with the camera and ask the user whether to avoid them in the future. Others only respond to contact.

No system should be considered a 100% guarantee of detecting small objects or animal feces. Before the first mapping, it is worth preparing the floor according to the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Thresholds, carpets and furniture height

Measure the highest threshold, the clearance under the couch and the thickness of the carpet. The declared ability to cross a threshold may refer to the perfect shape, not the sharp strip. Some sensors may behave differently on dark carpets than on a light floor.

4. Mopping

Draging a damp cloth is not the same as active scrubbing. What is important is the pressure, lifting the mop over the carpet, washing the pads, drying and the ability to adjust the amount of water. With wooden floors, especially check for leaks and leaving the mop wet.

5. Docking station

The station can empty dust, refill water, wash and dry mops. It reduces daily maintenance, but takes up space and generates the cost of bags, detergents and tank cleaning. Check the noise during emptying and the ease of removing sediment.

6. Parts and annual cost

Compare prices of filters, brushes, mops, bags and batteries. A cheaper robot with expensive materials may cost more over five years. The availability of original parts in Poland and the possibility of replacing the battery are important.

7. Application and work without the cloud

Check what functions remain after losing the Internet, whether maps can be deleted and how long the manufacturer supports the model. A robot dependent on a closed server may lose some functionality when the service terminates.

Practical selection method

  1. draw a plan of problem places,
  2. measure thresholds and furniture,
  3. write down the type of area and the number of animals,
  4. set maximum level of manual operation,
  5. calculate the cost of materials for three years,
  6. buy with the possibility of return if the apartment layout is unusual.

First week test

Do not throw away the packaging immediately. Run the robot in the most difficult hours, with typical mess and on all surfaces. Check not only the final result, but also the error history and the number of manual interventions.

Noise and Schedule

The robot itself may be quiet, but the emptying station produces a short, very loud sound. In an apartment with a child or an animal, it is important to be able to set hours during which emptying will not take place.

Repairability

Brushes and filters are not everything. Check the availability of wheels, laser module, pump and battery. In the case of an expensive model, the service should be able to replace the module without erasing the entire history of the device.

The most common purchasing mistakes

  • purchasing a station that does not fit in the selected location,
  • ignoring threshold heights,
  • assuming that the mop will replace manual washing,
  • no material calculation,
  • model selection without local service,
  • based solely on the ranking without taking into account the layout of the apartment.

RoboMorrow Evaluation

The best robot is not the one with the highest pascal count, but the one that finishes the job without help. Autonomy and service are more valuable than a single specification record.
