Orbbec collects Physical AI data without the target robot
Verification date: 10 August 2026.
A Japanese showcase
On 5 August 2026, Orbbec showcased its Robot-Free Data Collection Hardware Platform at ROSCon JP. The aim is to capture data for Physical AI models without waiting for the final target robot. The system includes EGO, UMI and WristCam forms for first-person observation, detailed hand-object interaction and wrist-level observation.
Confirmed demonstrator specifications
According to Orbbec, the Dual-Ego prototype uses two 2-megapixel fisheye cameras, synchronization within 1 ms, a six-axis IMU operating at up to 1,000 Hz and a weight of about 200 g. The EGO RGB-D series combines native depth measurement with LingBot-Depth, which is intended to fill difficult regions involving transparent and reflective objects.
Facts versus manufacturer claims
The public demonstration and the stated configuration are established. Synchronization accuracy, calibration quality, manufacturing experience and model results are figures published by Orbbec. No independent comparison of the full workflow with competing kits or public audit across multiple collection teams has been provided.
Why collecting data without the robot makes sense
Building a prototype fleet is expensive and slow. Lightweight devices worn by people can record grasping, manipulation and tabletop demonstrations earlier. That helps data work begin sooner. Transferring behaviour to a robot still requires adaptation to kinematics, forces, latency, sensors and safety procedures.
Poland and the EU
European labs and integrators will need clear licensing, EU data-storage options, consent for recorded people, anonymisation, export formats and access to calibration tools. The platform may lower the entry cost for data projects, but there is no public Polish price list or confirmed local sales and support channel.
What remains unknown
Pricing, full availability dates, ODM service costs, independently measured calibration repeatability, durability in shift work and the share of demonstrations usable without manual cleaning are not public.
RoboMorrow assessment
This is a practical direction: data can be produced before the final robot. Orbbec's advantage will be demonstrated only when users confirm repeatability, comfort, integration and whole-process economics, rather than specifications from a single showcase.
