A lawn with an area of ​​800-1000 m² is a serious, but still typical domestic task for a robot mower. This is a segment where you can find both mature models with a boundary wire and modern devices without a wire, using RTK, cameras, LiDAR or hybrid systems.

The biggest mistake is to buy the "up to 1000 m²" model for a lawn that is exactly 1000 m² without assessing its complexity. The nominal square footage does not take into account all obstacles, slopes, limited mowing hours, downtime after rain or time needed to travel between zones.

How much performance headroom?

For lawn area:

  • 700-800 m²: 1000 m² class model usually gives a reasonable headroom;
  • 850–1000 m²: it is worth considering the 1200–1500 m² class, especially in a complex garden;
  • approximately 1000 m² with a lot of obstacles, slopes or a limited schedule: more headroom may be more important than additional features.

This is not a hard and fast manufacturer rule. This is a practical protection against the device operating constantly at the maximum limit.

Measure your lawn first, not your plot

A 1000 m² plot may have only 400 m² of lawn. On the other hand, a 1,300 m² plot with a small house may have almost 1,000 m² of grass.

The following can be used for measurement:

  • geodetic plan;
  • satellite image with area measurement tool;
  • map of the robot manufacturer, if the application allows you to measure before purchasing;
  • division of the garden into rectangles and triangles.

Subtract flowerbeds, patios, pool, driveway and other areas not mowed.

Cable, RTK, Vision or LiDAR?

Boundary Wire

Works well if the garden is permanent, heavily shaded and has many tall elements that make satellite positioning difficult. Installation on 1000 m² is more labor-intensive than in a small garden, but can still give a very stable border.

The advantage is the maturity of the technology. Disadvantage - more difficult to change zones and risk of cable damage.

RTK

RTK allows you to create boundaries in the application and guide the robot along structured routes. It is convenient in open gardens and with frequent map changes.

Before purchasing, please check:

  • does the system require a local antenna;
  • whether using a paid or free network service;
  • how behaves when corrections are lost;
  • does it support a camera or other sensor;
  • does the manufacturer indicate sky visibility requirements?

Vision AI

Cameras help recognize obstacles and boundaries. Their effectiveness depends on lighting, contrast and the quality of the algorithms. On a 1000 m² lawn, it is important not only to detect the object, but also to smoothly plan a route without leaving large unmowed fragments.

LiDAR

LiDAR can be particularly interesting in gardens with trees, tall hedges and narrow spaces. Hybrid systems combine it with cameras and RTK to maintain position in a variety of conditions.

However, do not assume that all LiDAR functions identically. What matters are range, field of view, dirt resistance and mapping software.

If the actual lawn is 1000 m², the 800 m² option should be considered insufficient unless the manufacturer expressly allows higher performance in a given configuration. It's better not to base your purchase on the hope that the device will "catch up somehow".

What to pay attention to apart from the square footage?

Operating time and schedule constraints

Some robots have a daily mowing time limit depending on the surface type. Check if you can set the operation to the selected hours without losing the ability to maintain the entire lawn.

It's important if:

  • children enjoy the garden in the afternoon;
  • you have a dog;
  • you don't want to mow at night;
  • watering works at fixed times;
  • noise restrictions apply in the area.

Cutting width

Greater width may reduce working time in open areas. This is not always an advantage in a garden full of narrow passages and tight arches.

Zones and Maps

With 1000 m², the garden often consists of several parts: the front, the back, the strip next to the house and the part behind the garage. Check:

  • number of zones;
  • separate schedules;
  • different cutting heights;
  • temporarily disabled zones;
  • ability to edit the map without re-creating the whole thing;
  • drives on hard surfaces.

Slopes

Compare two parameters: maximum slope inside the area and maximum slope at the boundary. This is not always the same value.

In a garden with a slope, the following also counts:

  • drive and tread;
  • uphill start ability;
  • exit control;
  • behavior after rain;
  • way of turning;
  • risk of sliding beyond the virtual boundary.

Obstacles

On a larger lawn, the robot will encounter more branches, fruits, toys and animal activities. The obstacle recognition system helps, but does not relieve you from controlling your garden.

The following can be particularly difficult:

  • fine wires;
  • low toys;
  • garden hoses;
  • small branches;
  • mesh;
  • grass-colored items;
  • sudden faults and water banks.

Is it worth choosing a model with AWD?

AWD makes sense on difficult terrain, but it is not a requirement for good mowing of 1000 m². On a flat lawn, a good two-wheel drive may be sufficient.

A surcharge for AWD is justified when the robot regularly has to overcome slopes, unevenness, soft ground or difficult passages. Otherwise, better service, more space or more effective edge mowing may provide more value.

Costs that are easy to forget

When comparing offers, include:

  • items required for full installation;
  • antenna or mount if not included;
  • professional installation;
  • knives and discs;
  • connectivity package after promotional period;
  • inspection and wintering;
  • possible battery replacement;
  • transport to service;
  • garage if recommended.

The cheapest model may turn out to be more expensive if it requires unusual accessories or there is no efficient service in the country.

Selection Scenarios

Open, flat lawn 850 m²

A model without a cord of the 1000 m² class with systematic mowing is a good fit. The supply is moderate, so it is worth limiting the number of hours in which the garden is unavailable to the robot.

Lawn 900 m² under trees

Consider a hybrid system with LiDAR or cameras, or a mature wired model. RTK alone may not be the best solution if a large part of your garden has poor sky visibility.

Lawn 750 m² with a steep slope

Measurement is not an issue, but drive, grip and limiting the slope at the limit become crucial. The 800 m² model may be too close to the limit if the terrain slows down your work significantly.

Lawn 1000 m² in several zones

Look for 1200-1500 m² class, good map and route management. Check if the robot reaches all zones on its own.
