Galbot Launches Three Robot-Run Stores in Hong Kong in First Overseas Rollout

Verified: 31 August 2026, 16:10 CEST. Galbot formally launched the first batch of its robot-run stores outside mainland China today. Three Hong Kong locations are scheduled to welcome customers on 1 September. Important caveat: the “fully autonomous store” wording comes from organizers and the company; independent reporting by SCMP says a human attendant is still required for some operations, including selected replenishment tasks.

Galbot is making the kind of move the humanoid market needs more than another polished demo. Instead of a stage performance, the company is launching three real retail locations in Hong Kong: Hung Hom, Kai Tak and Wan Chai. The Hong Kong government says this is the first overseas rollout of Galbot Store, a format that the company says has already reached about 200 locations across nearly 50 mainland Chinese cities. The stores were formally presented on 31 August and are due to start serving customers on 1 September.

This is still not proof that a humanoid can independently run an entire shop. It is evidence of something more concrete: Galbot is taking a deployment model beyond its home market and testing whether robot-assisted retail can scale in a different commercial, regulatory and consumer environment.

Three stores and the first rollout outside mainland China

In an official launch speech, Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan said Galbot Store had already been deployed in nearly 50 mainland cities, with about 200 retail locations. He described Hong Kong as the first deployment outside mainland China, with three robot retail stores in the initial batch. That shift from a domestic network to a first overseas rollout is the material development in today’s story.

That distinction matters. The Galbot G1 moves on a four-wheel omnidirectional chassis. Galbot lists a maximum height of 1,730 mm, a body weight of 92.5 kg, 10 kg combined dual-arm payload and up to eight hours of operation under laboratory test conditions. In retail, wheels can be an advantage: floors are structured and flat, routes repeat, and stability plus energy efficiency may matter more than stair climbing.

What the robot actually does in the store

According to SCMP, the robots can take orders, retrieve and hand over goods, and prepare drinks using a connected coffee machine. Galbot says the stores use its AstraBrain embodied-AI foundation model. Its official G1 materials position the robot for picking, transport, shelf replenishment and customer interaction.

This is where Marketing language needs to be separated from operational evidence. Official material describes autonomously managed retail stores, yet SCMP reports that a human attendant remains necessary for some store operations, including certain replenishment tasks. No public data shows how often an operator intervenes, how many exceptions are handled manually, or what share of transactions is completed end-to-end without human help.

RoboMorrow therefore does not treat the launch as proof of a “human-free store.” We treat it as a commercial retail robotics deployment in which a meaningful part of a repetitive workflow is automated, while the real autonomy boundary still needs hard operating metrics.

Why this matters more than another humanoid demo

The 2026 humanoid market is full of videos showing running, dancing and isolated manipulation tasks. The hard part starts when a robot has to work every day, around customers, for long shifts and with consistent performance. Hong Kong gives Galbot a more meaningful test than a trade-show stage. The locations are public, repetitive and comparable. If the company follows through with additional outlets, it should become possible to distinguish a showcase deployment from an emerging repeatable operating model.

What we still do not know

The most important numbers remain undisclosed. We do not know the effective cost of a G1 in this deployment, store integration cost, robots per location, productive operating hours, pick or transaction success rates, human intervention frequency, average service time or maintenance cost. We also do not know the staffing ratio: how many people are required to supervise a given number of stores.

Those metrics will determine whether Galbot Store is a novelty or something that can compete with automated vending, micro-stores and conventional convenience retail. The “about 200 locations” figure is also company/government-reported rather than an independent audit of how many stores are currently active and operating at the same autonomy level.

What it could mean for Europe

The most interesting European implication is not the store format itself but the possibility that the first useful “humanoids” in small businesses may arrive on wheels rather than legs. Retail, pharmacies, back-of-store micro-warehouses and click-and-collect points have structured floors and narrow, repeatable workflows that can be easier to automate than general-purpose household work.

Entry into the EU would still raise additional issues: machine safety, liability in public-facing spaces, privacy and camera processing, cybersecurity, service infrastructure and local retail rules. Hong Kong is therefore an important expansion step, not evidence that the same system is ready for Poland or broad EU deployment.
