Robot mower: a season log and cost per square metre
Cost per square metre is useful only after defining the period and area the robot actually serves. A season log separates ownership cost from mowing quality and edging work. These are not results for a specific mower: this is a method for gathering your own data when comparing seasons or a contractor’s offer.

Define the measurement boundary
Record the accepted area, season dates and excluded zones. Do not divide cost by the whole property if the robot serves only the lawn. Separate the area it is intended to cover from the area effectively maintained. A changed garden layout or added zone needs a new description; otherwise the season comparison becomes misleading.
Actual costs and assumptions
Record measured electricity, consumed parts, service and installation costs. Show the device purchase separately from running expenditure. If you allocate the purchase across several seasons, label that number as your assumption rather than manufacturer-predicted life. Report edging and intervention minutes alongside money; label any optional value of time as an assumption too.
Formula and example
Season running cost per m² = actual season running expenditure ÷ accepted area in m². Calculation example: about €75 ÷ 600 m² = about €0.13/m² for the described season. These are fictional figures illustrating the formula, not a specific mower’s cost. The result is neither the cost of one pass nor a promise for next year.
Quality and downtime beside cost
Add missed zones, manual edging, downtime days and intervention reasons. The lowest cost is not the best outcome if the job was not completed. For a commercial purchase, agree acceptance and downtime response with the supplier. For a home garden, focus on the accepted result and owner’s active time.
Your recording sheet
Copy these fields into your notes. Mark missing data as “unconfirmed”, not as a zero result.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Site | Area, zones and season dates |
| Energy | kWh readings, dates and billed rate |
| Parts and service | Document, amount, reason and date |
| Upkeep | Edging, intervention and preparation minutes |
| Outcome | Unaccepted zones, downtime and comparison limitations |
Questions before deciding
Should I use advertised maximum capacity?
No. The denominator is the accepted area in your measurement.
Must I include the mower purchase?
Show the purchase separately. For total cost, disclose how you allocate it over time.

Method and limitations
The formulas and schedule are an editorial method. Results depend on your measurements, prices and period; calculation examples are not product data.
