Franka Research 3: seven-axis research arm and FCI
Featured visual: Franka Robotics. Product material; not a RoboMorrow hands-on test photograph.
Franka Research 3 is a research arm, not a humanoid. Its role in modern robotics is to provide a controlled platform for manipulation, contact-force and algorithm research. For some laboratories, concentrating on that problem is more useful than adding legs.
| Parameter | Manufacturer specification |
|---|---|
| Degrees of freedom | 7 |
| Payload | 3 kg |
| Reach | 855 mm |
| Torque sensing | All 7 joints |
| FCI | Control up to 1 kHz with an appropriate external real-time computer |

Why an arm belongs in a humanoid discussion
Manipulation is a research problem in its own right. Contact control, grasping and adaptation to an object can be studied without simultaneously solving whole-body balance. This does not minimise humanoid complexity; it helps match the instrument to the question.
A fixed workstation can make measurement and method comparison easier. The team should still state the experiment’s limits. A result achieved with an arm does not automatically establish that a mobile whole-body machine can perform the same task.
FR3 and a larger humanoid can therefore serve different roles within the same research programme.
A more focused platform can also make failure diagnosis clearer. When a task does not work, isolating perception, contact and control may be more informative than combining every subsystem in one demonstration.
Real-time control needs the right environment
A 1 kHz interface does not mean any laptop and application will deliver the same control behaviour. An appropriate computer, system configuration and connection are needed, following the manufacturer’s documentation.
Payload is not a complete task description either. Tooling, centre of gravity and movement need to be considered. Before purchasing, verify that the proposed configuration fits the platform specification.
A research plan should define measurements, recorded data and repeatability conditions. Control access is a capability, not a completed experimental methodology.
Similarly, ROS 2 compatibility does not remove the need to validate an application. Integration support helps development, but the behaviour of the full software stack still belongs in the testing plan.
Procurement: distinguish the arm from prototypes
The quotation should list the arm, gripper, controller, interfaces, training and support. A family name alone does not establish what the price includes.
Franka’s materials also show prototypes and development directions. A mobile or dual-arm setup appearing in a presentation does not mean the same package is supplied as standard with FR3. [10]
Franka Robotics belongs to the Agile Robots group. We do not count it as a completely independent rival in a company analysis. This is a corporate relationship, not a statement that the products have identical applications.
Custom controllers and tooling require assessment of the complete application. A cobot label does not replace safety assessment for a particular experiment or workstation.
Compare total laboratory requirements, not only the arm price. Tooling, workstation preparation and staff time can change which configuration is practical even before the first experiment starts.
Frequently asked questions
Is FR3 a humanoid?
No. It is a seven-axis research arm.
Does 1 kHz imply ready-made autonomy?
No. It describes a control interface under specified conditions, not a level of independence.
