Tesla Narrows Optimus Timeline: External Sales No Earlier Than H2 2027
Tesla is preparing to manufacture Optimus in Fremont, but commercial availability for external customers now appears further away than earlier public ambitions suggested. According to reporting based on a JPMorgan note after a meeting with Tesla, external sales of Optimus Gen 3 could begin no earlier than the second half of 2027. At the same time, Tesla’s official Q2 2026 update confirms that the first production line is being installed and that the initial robots are intended primarily for data collection and further functionality development.
That distinction matters. Starting production is not the same as starting sales. Tesla plans to build robots for its own use first, gather data through the Optimus Academy and improve functionality before moving into broader external commercialization. For the humanoid market, this is more useful than another polished demo because it begins to separate the manufacturing timeline from the customer-availability timeline.
What Tesla has actually confirmed
The strongest primary source is Tesla’s official Q2 2026 update. The company says the Model S and Model X manufacturing lines at Fremont have been decommissioned and that first-generation Optimus lines are being installed in their place. Tesla expects production in 2026, while its manufacturing-capacity table still lists Optimus in both California and Texas with a status of “Construction.”
More importantly, Tesla describes what the first units are for. The company says initial Optimus builds will be used in the Optimus Academy for training-data collection and further functionality development. That makes the first ramp an internal development phase, not a customer launch. The official Q2 material does not announce an order book, public pricing, a customer program or a delivery date for outside companies.

H2 2027 becomes the new reference point for external sales
The more specific commercialization date comes from reporting on JPMorgan’s meeting with Tesla in Fremont. Yahoo Finance, carrying a Benzinga report based on the JPMorgan note, says commercial sales of Optimus Gen 3 could begin in the second half of 2027. Other outlets describing the same note characterize H2 2027 as the earliest expected window for external customers.
This part of the story needs a clear qualifier: RoboMorrow could not verify a publicly available full copy of the JPMorgan note. The H2 2027 date should therefore not be treated as a formal Tesla product launch announcement. It is reported investor-meeting information repeated by multiple sources, but it remains indirect. The same applies to reports that the Gen 3 design is finalized and that its supply chain is largely secured. Those statements are attributed to Tesla through coverage of the JPMorgan meeting, not independently inspected facts.
Gen 3 has still not received a full public production-spec reveal
Reporting based on the JPMorgan note also says Tesla intends to reveal the final Optimus Gen 3 closer to the start of production, partly to limit the time competitors have to copy its design. That would explain why Tesla is discussing production infrastructure and supply-chain readiness without yet publishing a complete production configuration.
Several pieces of information are still missing before the market can judge commercial readiness: there is no confirmed price, sales configuration, service model, first-customer list, task-level autonomy specification or 2027 delivery volume. There is also no confirmed European sales date. Any headline claiming that Optimus is now “going on sale” would therefore go beyond what has been established.
One million in Fremont and 10 million in Texas are design capacities, not output
Tesla’s scale ambitions remain unusually large. In its Q1 2026 update, the company said the first-generation Fremont line is designed for 1 million robots per year. A second-generation line planned for Gigafactory Texas is being designed around a long-term annual production capacity of 10 million robots.
Those numbers must not be confused with current production, orders or deliveries. Tesla itself warns in its manufacturing disclosures that installed or planned capacity does not equal the current production rate. Optimus is still classified as under construction at both sites. The eventual ramp will depend on component availability, line yield, robot reliability, training data, software maturity and the ability to manufacture novel actuators and hands consistently at scale.
The new timing is later than Musk’s earlier ambition
The latest reference point is also useful because it can be compared with previous public statements. Reuters reported in July 2024 that Elon Musk expected low production for Tesla’s internal use first and aimed for high production for external companies in 2026. An H2 2027 external-sales window is clearly later than that earlier ambition.
Calling it a simple one-year delay would still be too neat. Tesla has repeatedly changed how it describes different Optimus milestones, and mass production, internal deployment and regular external sales are separate events. The most defensible reading of the current plan is a sequence: install the line → build internal units → collect data and expand functionality → then sell to customers.
What it means for Europe and Poland
For Europe, the competitive timing may matter more than Tesla’s eventual headline production capacity. Chinese humanoid manufacturers and several Western rivals are already pursuing industrial, logistics and service deployments with external customers. If Optimus is not offered outside Tesla until the second half of 2027, competitors gain additional months to collect real-world data, build integrations, improve uptime and establish service relationships.
There is currently no confirmed Optimus sales timetable for Poland or the wider European Union. A regular European launch would require not only a mature product and commercial channel but also compliance with the applicable safety and conformity requirements for the final configuration, plus a workable service and liability model. Those issues become especially important for a general-purpose robot operating close to people.
RoboMorrow view: the production line matters more than another demo
The most credible part of this story is not the promise of millions of robots and not even the H2 2027 target. It is that Tesla has physically repurposed part of Fremont for Optimus and is showing first-generation production-line infrastructure. That is a tangible step from laboratory development toward industrialization.
Forecasts still deserve skepticism. Tesla has not disclosed the price or full production specifications of Gen 3, and external sales remain a forward-looking plan. The current stage is best described as a move from demonstration toward industrialization, not as a market launch. The next truly important signals will be a production-spec Gen 3 reveal, verified serial production and a measurable number of robots doing sustained work outside Tesla.
