Cleaning robot vs walk-behind scrubber: compare labour time
A cleaning robot can take longer to travel a floor than a walk-behind scrubber while using fewer staff minutes. It can also demand enough interventions to erase that benefit. Start with human involvement and accepted floor area, rather than the machine’s maximum speed.

Define the same job first
Agree the accessible cleaning area, starting dirt and required finish. Exclude spaces that neither machine can reach. If the robot leaves sections for manual work, include that work in its option. This compares completion of the service rather than an isolated machine run.

An illustrative time calculation
Suppose the walk-behind option takes 55 staff minutes per day and the robot requires 20 minutes including preparation and rework. The difference is 35 minutes. Over 20 days that is 700 minutes, or 11 hours 40 minutes available for other duties. These are assumed inputs, not test results or automatic payroll savings.
If someone must remain with the machine for most of the run and cannot undertake other work, count that attendance. It does not disappear merely because the person is not pressing buttons.
Why catalogue coverage is insufficient
For example, PUDU distinguishes full cleaning from spot cleaning on CC1 Pro. A large m²/h figure for finding patches is not a promise to wash every part of a floor at that rate. Equally, theoretical scrubber width and speed omit turning and navigating fixtures.
A five-shift measurement sheet
- Record the day, zone, accessible area and initial dirt.
- Time setup, required supervision, interventions, touch-ups and equipment care.
- Separately record elapsed time until the dry, accepted area can reopen.
- Label unusual events rather than silently removing them from the average.
- Compare both a typical shift and the most difficult one; each affects staffing.
Separate released time from cash savings
Recovering 11 hours and 40 minutes a month could mean other tasks finish sooner, overtime falls, or the same team achieves a better cleaning standard. It does not automatically reduce the cleaning invoice. Record where the time will go and whether the paid scope of work changes.
Include purchase or rental, installation, docking, consumables, service and replacement cleaning during downtime. Do not charge a shared cost only to the robot. Conversely, additional route preparation that did not exist previously must remain in its operating calculation.
An apparently small number of interventions
Assume six interventions lasting three minutes each during one task. That is 18 minutes of direct assistance before preparation and finishing. If staff must leave a distant workstation, include the actual walking time and the time needed to resume the previous activity. Do not add those minutes again if they are already included in the measured service interval.
Autonomous travel in this scenario may not deliver the expected improvement. First identify the reason for interventions: route blockage, task settings, consumable handling or a machine limitation. A larger machine does not necessarily solve an organisational problem.

Compare an ordinary shift and a more difficult one. Do not discard a delivery day if deliveries are a normal part of the week. The robot’s result should include the conditions in which it is expected to replace the manually guided machine.
When the robot has an advantage
A useful signal is repeatable completion of a stable task with few interventions while the team can genuinely do other work. A walk-behind machine may remain more practical for frequently changing layouts, a tight cleaning window or work needing continual operator decisions.
Assess whether the released time is usable. Several scattered two-minute gaps may not support the same alternative task as an uninterrupted half-hour. Ask the team which specific duty they could complete and check it during the trial.
After measuring, compare complete quotations: machine, station, installation, consumables, service and replacement arrangements during downtime. Choose the option that fits the cleaning window and reduces a defined workload. Autonomous travel by itself does not establish a benefit for the whole shift.
