Cleaning a store overnight with a robot: plan the full shift

Overnight robotic cleaning succeeds when the whole shift is prepared: floor, route, station, exception handling and morning acceptance. An app schedule is just one component. The goal is a store ready to open, rather than a completed task on a screen.

Map the dependencies across the night

The robot may need the same aisle as the replenishment team. A pallet placed after closing can obstruct a route that worked earlier. Before choosing a start time, agree the sequence of deliveries, packaging removal, floor preparation and washing.

Find the actual operating window

There are eight hours from 22:00 to 06:00. If deliveries block the aisles until midnight and acceptance must finish by 05:30, only five and a half hours remain. This is a planning example, not a robot runtime claim. Travel, possible charging, repeated passes and touch-ups must fit that window.

Do not assume the entire store becomes available at once. Divide it into zones with separate release times. Check whether the configured robot can revisit a skipped zone rather than assuming it will return automatically when a pallet moves.

What should happen after a stop

  1. An alert reaches a named person through a channel that works at night.
  2. The responder checks whether the issue can be resolved using the trained procedure.
  3. If work cannot resume, the zone enters the manual-cleaning fallback plan.
  4. The incident and missed area remain visible to the person accepting the store in the morning.

Test this with normal staffing. Loss of internet, a flat phone battery or an incorrect alert recipient should not first become apparent after the store opens. Do not disable safeguards or alarms to force a scheduled task to finish.

A report versus a store ready to open

PUDU describes reporting and cleaning-result checks on CC1 Pro. Those can direct attention to places needing inspection, but acceptance concerns the actual floor. The opening team should know which zones were skipped, where rework occurred and what still needs attention.

Operation without an attending operator must match the machine instructions and deployment conditions. Having a scheduling feature does not establish that every site configuration is suitable for operation without supervision.

Schedule three areas instead of one start time

In an illustrative store, the entrance is available at 22:30, sales aisles after replenishment at midnight, and the back room only at 01:00. A single start time may send the robot into obstacles absent during the daytime demonstration. Give each area a readiness condition, a person confirming handover and an acceptance deadline.

These times illustrate a process, not a universal operating schedule. Add the actual tasks, travel and dock servicing. With one robot, areas compete for the same available time even when each task individually fits its window.

Set the fallback decision time

If store acceptance is due at 05:30 and manual completion plus inspection require 45 minutes, the latest start for that fallback is 04:45. Add a reserve appropriate to the real operation. Do not wait until opening time to discover that the robot has failed to finish.

Agree who makes the decision and how they identify outstanding work. After a stop, the team needs a list of unfinished areas, not just an error message. Record manual corrections in the same acceptance log so they are not later mistaken for the robot’s output.

Review after the first week

Count shifts accepted on time, intervention minutes and areas most often corrected manually. Note whether failures follow a particular delivery or display change. This helps separate a scheduling problem from a machine-selection problem.

After the store layout changes, reassess the route and task dependencies. A map configured once does not replace the replenishment team’s everyday handover of usable space.

The first deployment week

Begin with a representative zone and a trained person present, then expand after successful acceptance. Record obstructions, intervention time and reasons for manual touch-ups. Adjust start times to the actual delivery pattern. Successful automation means a consistently ready store and a clear response to exceptions.
