How many hours a day should a robot mower run?

There is no single daily runtime that suits every robot mower. Scheduling depends on actual lawn area, grass growth, zone layout, travel and charging. A model’s rated lawn size helps with selection; it is not a ready-made timetable for every garden.

Separate three kinds of time

Do not divide your lawn area by a speed from an unrelated video. Logs from several ordinary cycles on your own lawn are more useful. Check what the app counts as covered area and task time, because systems can handle pauses differently.

A simple scheduling example

Assume, solely for illustration, a 600 m² job and a rate of 150 m² per hour of actual mowing. That gives four hours. Add an assumed hour of charging and half an hour of travel and other pauses, and the complete task takes five and a half hours. These are calculation inputs, not results from testing Navimow or another model.

A six-hour window leaves little spare time. A three-hour window cannot contain the whole job, so adjust zones, frequency, availability or machine selection. Do not try to increase cutting speed beyond manufacturer settings.

Zones may need different schedules

A sunny patch and an area under trees can differ in growth, moisture and availability. Examine turf condition and missed strips after several cycles. Adjust frequency gradually, following lawn-care guidance and the mower instructions. More runtime alone does not prove a better result.

Navimow describes zone scheduling and adverse-weather responses for i2 LiDAR. Verify the details for the exact model, app version and settings. A weather pause reduces available time; it does not establish that the scheduled area was completed.

Planning the first week

  1. Identify safe daylight windows when children and pets are not using the garden. Obstacle recognition is not a guarantee that every small animal will be protected.
  2. Run a representative cycle and log mowing, charging, travel and interruptions.
  3. Inspect coverage and grass condition rather than relying only on a percentage in the app.
  4. Keep spare time for weather, maintenance and a more demanding zone.
  5. After several cycles, change one setting at a time and compare results.

Plan the week around access as well as area

The front lawn may be free in the morning, the family area only later, and a connecting passage blocked on gardening days. Plan tasks so the robot can safely reach each area and return. A map describes geometry but does not know every household routine.

For each zone, record mowable area, permitted time window, full task duration and the grass condition afterwards. If an area was inaccessible, do not mark the entire cycle as completed just because the robot returned to its station.

Calculate the time reserve

If a measured complete cycle takes five hours and the safe window is six hours, one hour remains. Window utilisation is 5/6, approximately 83%. If the cycle increases to 6.5 hours, it no longer fits the same schedule. This is a calculation example, not a prescribed mower threshold.

Use full-cycle time if it already includes charging and travel. If your input covers only active mowing, add breaks separately. Counting charging twice overstates the requirement; omitting it understates it.

Reassess after a weather interruption

Do not automatically recover missed work by using every available hour. First assess the grass, the conditions permitted by the mower and safe use of the garden. After a longer interruption, the plan may need to change in line with the manual and appropriate lawn care. More scheduled hours alone do not demonstrate improvement.

Keep records of failed tasks during the first week. An inaccessible passage or docking problem may consume more time than mowing itself. Resolving the cause provides a better basis for deciding whether the machine is actually undersized for the plot.

When the mower cannot keep up

Find the cause first: a blocked passage, a short window, frequent interventions, docking difficulty or cutting components needing attention. Then assess whether a larger machine is necessary. A complete cycle log separates limited mowing capacity from time lost to route organisation.

Recheck the plan as conditions change. A schedule that worked during slow growth may need adjustment later, while a long interruption should be handled according to the mower’s instructions for the resulting grass height. Do not assume that one very long run is always the right recovery method.

A good schedule maintains an even result, fits safe operating hours and leaves capacity in reserve. It does not use every available hour simply because the app permits it.

Will the mower fit its operating window?

Use the cutting-only rate, excluding breaks and charging. If your rate already covers the whole cycle, those pauses are included: do not add them again. This models one cycle; it does not prescribe mowing frequency or establish that the chosen hours are safe.

Full cycle = area / cutting rate + charging + other pauses. Spare time = window − full cycle. Utilisation = full cycle / window × 100%.
