A robot without a local RTK station can use network corrections, LiDAR or cameras. These are three different approaches, often lumped together under the slogan "no antenna". The lack of a mast in the garden simplifies installation, but does not always mean complete independence from coverage, subscription or lighting conditions.

Shortest answer: if you don't want to install a local RTK antenna, you have three main routes: Network RTK, LiDAR, or pure vision navigation. Network RTK requires service coverage and connectivity; LiDAR needs clear surrounding geometry; cameras depend on light and the quality of the lawn borders.

1. Network RTK: corrections over the network

The robot receives corrections via a cellular or Internet connection, so it does not need its own reference station in the garden. Examples are MAMMOTION YUKA mini 2 800 and SEGWAY NAVIMOW i210 LiDAR Pro. Before purchasing, you need to check the service coverage in a specific location and access conditions in the following years.

2. LiDAR: local map without satellites

LiDAR measures the distance to the surroundings and can locate the robot relative to the created map. DREAME A2 2000 uses 3D scanning and a camera, so it does not require RTK. The advantage is working under trees and near buildings. The challenge may be very open spaces with few characteristic points, intense dirt on the sensor or a dynamically changing environment.

3. Pure Vision: cameras and algorithms

eufy Robot Lawn Mower E15 and WORX Landroid Vision AI M600 represent a primarily camera-based approach. The robot recognizes grass, boundaries and obstacles. Installation may be very simple, but the garden must have clear edges and the image quality changes with weather, shade and time of day.

Technology Comparison

System The biggest advantage Main Limit A good choice when
Network RTK accuracy without local antenna coverage and transmission dependency the garden has good coverage and partly open sky
LiDAR working under trees and on buildings price and need for a readable 3D map the garden is complex and has many points of reference
Vision AI very simple installation image and border dependency lawn has clear edges and moderate size
Hybrid System single sensor weakness immunity increased complexity and cost the garden combines open space, trees and narrow passages

Does "no RTK station" mean no subscription?

Not always. Access to online corrections and data may be included, free for a limited period of time, or require a later fee. Conditions may vary between countries and vary. Check the service regulations, operation after the free period expires and the ability to work via Wi-Fi.

What to check before purchasing

  • Network RTK coverage map for own address;
  • Wi-Fi and cellular network coverage throughout the garden;
  • can the robot continue working after temporarily losing corrections;
  • minimum quality of lawn borders required by the vision system;
  • can mapping be done automatically or does it require robot guidance?
  • conditions for access to cloud services and transmission after the warranty period.

Verdict

The lack of a local antenna is a convenience, not a separate quality class. The best system is the one whose weaknesses do not coincide with difficult places in your garden. With trees, choose local perception; with an open lawn, Network RTK may be easier; with clear borders Pure Vision may be enough.

What happens when you lose your internet

Network RTK requires receiving corrections, but the robot's behavior after losing connection depends on the manufacturer. The device can use local vision, stop, return to the station or work with less accuracy. This is one of the most important scenarios to check before purchasing.

Privacy & Cloud

Vision robots record the image of the environment, and network systems use the account and cloud services. Check whether image analysis is performed locally, whether the material is sent, how long the data is stored and whether remote viewing can be disabled. In a street garden, the camera may capture more than just the lawn.

Garden map after changes

Furniture, swimming pool, trampoline and seasonal discounts change the environment. LiDAR and vision should be able to deal with temporary objects, but the virtual boundaries still need to be updated. Check if the application allows you to quickly move the forbidden zone without remapping the entire plot.

Who still makes sense for a local antenna

Your own RTK station may provide greater independence from network service coverage, especially in plots outside the city. If you have a good view of the sky and space for proper installation, the antenna does not have to be a disadvantage. The lack of an antenna is especially valuable where community regulations, aesthetics or building layout make installation difficult.

Minimum test before purchase

  • Check network and Wi-Fi coverage at the furthest point.
  • Request confirmation of action after loss of corrections.
  • Assess work under trees and against house walls.
  • Check the payment terms for your stream after the promotional period.
  • Read the camera and cloud data policy.

FAQ: robot without local antenna

Does Network RTK work everywhere in Poland?

This should not be assumed. The coverage and quality of corrections must be checked for a specific address. Additionally, the robot needs communication to download correction data.

Does LiDAR work in a completely empty garden?

Might work, but the localization system needs distinctive geometry. A very open space without objects can be more difficult than a garden with buildings, trees and solid edges.
