Robot mowers in the rain: when to run and when to stop
Many modern robots are rainproof and can mow wet grass. This does not mean that working during every downpour is best for the lawn, traction and cleanliness of the device. It is necessary to distinguish between the water resistance of the structure and the quality of mowing in specific conditions.
Is the robot waterproof?
Check the IP rating and manual of your specific model. IPX5 or IPX6 describes resistance to water jets, but does not mean the device is submersible. The instructions may also limit the method of washing and the use of a pressure washer.
Why do some robots mow in the rain?
The robot cuts a very small piece of grass and is lighter than a classic mower. Husqvarna states that Automower devices are protected against rain and can operate in a variety of conditions. When to stop mowing
- there is water on the lawn or the wheels leave ruts;
- the robot slides on a slope or wipes the turf when turning;
- there is a storm and risk of surges;
- wet clippings form thick layers under the casing;
- the rainfall is so heavy that the camera or local sensor loses its effectiveness;
- the manufacturer of a specific model recommends operation only in dry conditions.

Precipitation itself is usually not the main problem, but heavy clouds, treetops and reflections from wet surfaces can worsen reception conditions. The hybrid system can maintain stability with cameras, LiDAR and odometry.

Drops, dirty lens, low contrast and wet edges can make image classification difficult. Check the cleanliness of the camera cover regularly.
LiDAR
LiDAR is less dependent on light, but drops, fog and dirt on the sensor window can affect the measurement. After heavy rain, it is worth examining the housing and cleaning the sensors according to the instructions.
Is a rain sensor always an advantage?
The robot stop sensor protects against dirt and ruts, but during a rainy week it may limit the number of available mowing hours. In such a garden, efficiency and a quick return to work after the weather improves are important.
Practical Schedule
- Set mowing on a day when the turf has a chance to dry out.
- Check soft areas and slopes after heavy rainfall.
- Limit turning at one point if wheels are slipping.
- Clean the bottom of the robot after working in wet grass.
- Do not store the device in a constantly damp place during winter.
Verdict
Rainproof provides flexibility but is not a substitute for assessing conditions. A light rainfall may be acceptable, but wet ground and heavy downpour are a good reason to take a break. The most important thing is to secure the turf, traction and electronics in accordance with the instructions.
Effect of wet grass on cutting quality
Wet blades stick together and may be pressed down instead of cleanly cut. The cuttings stick to the disc and housing, disturbing the air flow. If you see torn ends or rolls of wet grass after driving, wait until the turf dries.
Wet soil is a bigger problem than drops
Electronics may be resistant to precipitation, but the wheels leave ruts on soft ground and tear up grass. Headlands near the station, lower parts of slopes and places after earthworks are particularly vulnerable. It is better to temporarily turn off the permanently wet zone.

Should you change the cutting height after rain?
If the grass has grown during the break, raise the height and lower it gradually. Cutting too much of the wet blade reduces the quality and increases the load.
