Robot vacuum not returning to its dock: diagnose before resetting
“It will not return to the dock” can describe three different failures: the robot never reaches the dock area, reaches it but cannot enter, or enters without charging. Identify the stage first. Resetting the map before observing this can remove useful diagnostic information.

Find where the return sequence stops

Roborock’s Saros 20 manual specifies a hard, level floor and warns against blocking the dock beacon or placing it in direct sunlight. These are examples for that device. Check your own model for clearances and indicator behaviour.
A short docking trial before the full return route
Record the current error and save a map screenshot. If the manual permits it, place the robot in front of its dock and request a return using the button or app. Observe whether it can complete the docking manoeuvre itself. Then test the return from its normal working area without moving the station.
Successful close-range docking but a failed return from another room narrows attention to the route or localisation; it does not fully diagnose the electronics. A failed short approach also means rebuilding the entire home map should not be the automatic first response.
What changed since the last successful run?
- Was the dock, a mat or nearby furniture moved?
- Was a door closed or a no-go zone added across the route?
- Was the robot carried to another floor?
- Were the base, tanks or other components removed for cleaning?
- Does the failure happen only at a particular time or after a particular mode?
Restore one relevant condition and repeat the trial. A photograph of the previous dock position can be more useful than several undocumented resets.
Keep maintenance as a separate step
Before maintenance, switch off and disconnect the components specified in the manual. Do not clean charging contacts with wet material or dismantle a power supply. Inspect accessible sensors, the approach and base attachment. The model’s instructions determine cleaning methods and removable parts.
When to contact service
A damaged cable, water damage, a burning smell or unusual heating means stopping home trials. For a repeatable error, provide the robot and dock model, exact message, a recording of one approach and the close-range trial result. Do not bypass protections or substitute an arbitrary power supply.
Before resetting: preserve your map and settings, read the manufacturer’s procedure and establish what it deletes. This guide organises diagnosis; it is not a service manual or a promise that every fault can be repaired at home.
