Robot vacuum and dock dimensions: how to measure the space

Measurement guide, updated 7 September 2026. Dimensions come from official manufacturer pages. Brands may list side order differently, so we separate robot height from the dock's floor footprint.

Measure three things: the lowest clearance along the complete robot route, the dock footprint on the floor, and service space for opening lids and removing tanks. Do not design to an exact catalogue fit. Crossbars, hanging fabric, an uneven floor or a cable can consume the required margin.

Measurement 1: find the lowest point

Push a rigid rule or simple cardboard gauge into several positions: near the edge, through the centre and alongside crossbars. Approach from both sides because floors may be uneven. Check hanging upholstery and sofa-bed mechanisms. The number at the front edge is not enough when the route becomes lower farther inside.

Allow a practical margin instead of matching the published height exactly. Minimum height may apply only in a specified sensor position, while uneven flooring, carpet and body movement need tolerance.

Measurement 2: dock width is not the whole installation

Mark the stated floor rectangle with removable tape. Place a robot-sized cardboard outline in front and confirm that it can be removed without hitting a door or furniture leg. Include the power cable, socket access and a flat, hard floor.

Dock height does not automatically include the space required to raise a lid. Check how tanks and bags are removed in the manual. A station may look tidy under a worktop yet make every service task difficult.

Measurement 3: plumbing is a separate project

Water-connected variants can have different constraints from tank docks. Roborock lists installation requirements for the corresponding Saros 20 version, including pipes within 6 metres, a hard flat floor and strong Wi-Fi. Do not transfer those conditions to a Dreame dock or another Roborock variant.

Pre-purchase measurement card

  • Lowest clearance in millimetres and the obstacle's position.
  • Highest threshold profile: height, width and number of steps.
  • Maximum dock footprint available on the floor.
  • Free room above and in front of the dock.
  • Cable route, socket, Wi-Fi and any plumbing access.
  • Return terms if the robot cannot pass despite measurement.

Turn measurements into a buying decision

First remove machines that do not fit with a reasonable margin. Then compare mopping, thresholds, service and complete bundle cost. If X60 or Saros 20 reaches a critical area that X50 cannot enter, lower height has concrete value. If every candidate has ample room, a few millimetres do not justify a premium by themselves.
