Robot vacuum on two floors: one dock or two robots?
One robot can serve two floors when the specific model supports separate maps and can identify the level it is on. You still have to carry it. Dock access often matters more than map capacity: upstairs, the robot cannot empty its bin, wash its pads or refill at a station that remains downstairs.

When one robot is a sensible choice
A shared robot suits a home where upstairs needs less frequent cleaning, carrying the device is practical and the main upstairs task is vacuuming. If you mop both levels daily and want everything done while you are out, a second robot may remove more manual work than upgrading one machine.

A second map does not duplicate the whole system
Roborock explains additional mapping without moving the dock using the S7 as an example and lists compatible models. In that workflow the robot returns to its starting location. The manufacturer notes model and firmware differences. Do not transfer that map limit or procedure to every newer range.
Before buying, ask for three separate demonstrations: saving another floor, recognising that floor after carrying the robot and ending a task without the dock. Also ask what happens when the battery is low or the pads need washing. A screenshot showing two maps does not answer those questions.
Prepare the first upstairs run
- Check the exact manual and approved lifting points. Pause or switch off the robot as directed before carrying it.
- Prepare the accessible floor. Cliff sensors do not replace any physical protection required around stairs.
- Name maps clearly, such as “Ground floor” and “Upstairs”. Use room names that cannot be confused across levels.
- Supervise the first vacuum-only run. Record where the robot finishes and its remaining charge.
- Then assess mopping separately, including the restrictions when its wash station is unavailable.
A weekly handling worksheet
Log active time spent carrying, preparing pads, emptying the bin, correcting localisation and returning the robot to its dock. Keep unattended driving time separate from the minutes you personally spend on the job.
Illustrative calculation, not a device test: six minutes of extra handling per upstairs session becomes 18 minutes a week at three sessions, or 42 minutes at seven sessions. Substitute your own measurements. Then ask whether a second purchase would actually remove those tasks. Two robots still need maintenance and replacement parts.
A 120 m² home: plan each floor separately
Consider 70 m² of accessible floor downstairs and 50 m² upstairs. The ground floor needs five vacuuming sessions and three mopping sessions a week; the bedrooms upstairs need three scheduled vacuuming sessions. This is an illustrative household routine, not a universal cleaning frequency. One robot could normally live downstairs and be carried upstairs on three agreed days. The practical question is whether someone can move it and collect it on those days.
If upstairs cleaning must happen while everyone is away, a schedule cannot provide the missing transport. You can move the task to the evening or consider a second system. Moving the dock before every cycle creates another task; it should not be the assumed solution to cleaning two floors.

What is the extra carrying worth to you?
Three sessions requiring six extra hands-on minutes each add up to 18 minutes a week, or 15.6 hours over 52 weeks. Count transport and work specifically caused by the second floor. Do not count routine filter cleaning twice if it would also be necessary downstairs. A second robot creates its own maintenance, so subtract those additional tasks from the apparent saving.
Before buying another system, set a personal threshold: how many hours you want to recover each year and what additional purchase cost is acceptable. Those hours do not automatically become a cash saving. One household values convenience; another needs both floors cleaned while everyone is out.
Three things a demonstration should show
Ask for recognition of the second floor after carrying, selection of the correct task and completion at the expected location. For mopping, add a demonstration of pad handling when the dock remains on the other floor. That is more informative than the maximum number of maps stored in the app.
One dock, another dock or another robot?
An additional dock is an option only when the manufacturer confirms compatibility with the exact robot and supports that arrangement. Matching connectors or similar housings are insufficient. A second robot can follow an independent schedule, but adds filters, brushes and bins that someone has to maintain.
Also consider failure recovery. If the shared robot is awaiting a part, neither floor has automation. Two different models reduce dependence on one machine but may need different consumables and app settings. Two matching models can simplify your parts stock, although compatibility still needs checking against their full model identifiers.
Choose one robot if a supervised trial shows that carrying and the mopping limitations are acceptable. Consider two when both levels need routine unattended cleaning. Before ordering, measure each dock location and build a realistic replacement-parts basket for the proposed arrangement.
